2023/24

PROJECT OVERVIEW

BACKGROUND:

The project was carried out with the University of Washington. The team included 6 students from different subjects in their last year, a product manager, a product owner, a UX/UI designer, and my role as a Lead UX/UI designer.

PROBLEM:

Argentina is currently facing a crisis with stray dogs and cats, which requires the support and advocacy of shelters, organizations, and citizens. However, the overwhelming number of animals, financial problems, and lack of staff have created a difficult scenario for these organizations.

SOLUTION:

Two mobile applications, one designed for the management of shelters and organizations to help with their daily activities and lack of staff, and the other one designed for citizens interested in donating money or offering assistance as volunteers in different activities.

ABOUT THE PROCESS

01 EMPATHIZE:

  • I conducted UX benchmarking to deeply analyze the market and observe how other players were addressing similar products or features.

  • I conducted desktop research to understand the selected target audience and current design trends for this product.

  • I conducted user interviews using a previously formulated script to gain a deeper understanding of our users behaviors and to obtain real data to validate our hypotheses regarding the street animal problems in Argentina, and to compare them to those in the United States.

  1. Measuring User Needs: As an initial step, we evaluated the user needs and concerns.

  2. Creating Targeted Questions: To validate our hypotheses, we formulated precise questions.

  3. Refining Hypotheses: With the feedback and insights gathered, we refined our initial hypotheses based on real user experiences.

INTERVIEWS

PROCESS OVERVIEW:

  1. Quantitative Data Analysis: For analysis quantitative data to identify trends and patterns on shelter management and the street situation of animals.

  2. Qualitative Discoveries: For discover insights and gathering in-depth feedback on user concerns and fears regarding the animal street situation in Argentina.

ARGENTINA

Shelter in Buenos Aires, ARG.

  • Today, we have a lot of challenges and very little assistance. We have a low adoption rates, commitment from volunteers, and donations. Additionally, the internal organization within the shelter is very difficult.

  • Answering messages, managing numerous alerts, and unfortunately not being able to help everyone. We also organize rescue transfers or veterinary care and we stay in contact with all the transits, which can range from 10 to 70 in total depending on the time. Also, we take care of the animals we have at the shelter.

It's a lot of tasks for only 5 people.

  • Only 5 volunteers.

  • We interview people interested in adopting and ask questions on various issues.

We assume it is similar in other shelters.

  • We use our personal phones, and sometimes our personal computers, we don’t have any devices specifically for the shelter use.

  • Donations.

UNITED STATES

Cat Shelter in Washington, USA.

  • Well, I think that it will be take care of the animlas for as long as we can because we have a lot of cats coming in every day.

  • Medical attention, cleaning, and observation of the cats.

  • We have directors, employees and volunteers.

  • It's generally a 45-minute process, and we also implement an adoption timeline plan where we follow up on our adoptions for 3 weeks. Our adoption specialists check in on them if we don’t hear back. We match the right cat with the right person, and they go home with an adoption packet, medical information, and 30 days of free pet insurance. Additionally, we encourage people to call us and ask for help.

  • The shelter's computers and phone.

  • Customer donations, adoption fees, retail sales, events.

PEOPLE IN ARGENTINA

+10 INTERVIEWS

Person 1 in Buenos Aires, ARG.

  • I am aware of it, but I don’t take an active role with the animals I encounter. I think it's because I don't know what to do in those situations —how to approach the animal, how to prevent it from leaving, etc.

  • I have never contacted a shelter because I don't know much about that world. I only feed the street dogs if I can.

  • Not so much.

  • I have donated money sometimes in my life through links on social media. It's the only way I know.

  • I don't know because I never tried to be a volunteer, so I haven't searched for information about it.

  • I don't see much, but when I do, it's through social media.

Person 2 in Buenos Aires, ARG.

  • They make me very sorry. I believe the state could collaborate with shelters (NGOs, civil associations), and organize mass castrations. This could significantly reduce the high number of animals on the streets.

  • I have found animals and the shelters do not accept them because they already have many rescued and insufficient funds. So whenever I find a little animal I try to publish it to find the owners or a home, if possible I keep it in transit until I find a responsible person but I can't do it for a long time because I have other animals.

  • I know some things, but I don't see a lot of information about them on the internet or social media. I'm aware that they have a lot of work, so whenever possible, I try to help animals on my own

  • I don't donate money, but if I did, I think I would try donating through the shelter's website. However, I'm aware that not all shelters have a webpage, so I'm not sure.

  • I only know that if you want to be a volunteer you have to contact the shelter, but I don't know how is the process.

  • Internet.

02 DEFINE:

We processed the feedback and insights, which were based on real data gathered during the Empathize stage, to analyze and formulate our problem statements.

PROBLEM STATEMENTS

  • Argentinian citizens need to have accessible information about how to help shelters and animals on the street because they often don't know what to do, where to call, or how to volunteer.

  • Shelters need to have more help and become more known and accessible to the citizens because they lack sufficient funding and donations, and they are overwhelmed by animals.

  • Shelters that are not civil associations need to have accessible information and resources to help them during this process because it is complicated, and most of them face challenges during this process.

03 IDEATE:

We created a potential product features map to explore, organize, and ideate solutions to resolve the user problems that we discovered and validated in the preceding stages.

04 DESIGN:

We created diagrams and wireframes to gain clarity on the sequence and content of screens that the user will navigate through before designing them.

05 TEST:

PROCESS OVERVIEW

I crafted a first lo-fi prototype to test it using diverse testing methods to improve and validate the design with the target audience, including donors, shelter managers, and volunteers, in order to design the hi-fi screens.

  • +8 moderated usability testings via Google Meet.

  • +4 moderated A/B testings via Google Meet.
